Cross-Country Collaboration: Training on Innovative Learning Media at SMK Tunku Syed Idrus

On Tuesday, August 15, 2025, a training session was held at SMK Tunku Syed Idrus in Tampin, Malaysia. The event was attended by 80 teachers from various subjects, the Foundation Chairman, the school principal, representatives from Universiti Pendidikan Malaysia, and representatives from the Tampin Primary Education Department in Negeri Sembilan. This activity was an initiative by the Community Service (PkM) Team from the Sociology Department of FISIP UNY, with collaboration from UPSI, SMK Tunku Syed Idrus, and the Tampin Primary Education Department.

The event began with remarks from Haji Mohamd Isa bin Haji Wahab, the Foundation Chairman. This was followed by presentations from the team, which included Dr. Grendi Hendrastomo, Dr. Nur Endah Januarti, Indra Rahayu Ningsih, M.Pd., and Sasiana Gilar Apriantika, M.A. The theme of the activity was "The Use of Media and Gamification Applications in Learning to Enhance Student Participation." This theme was chosen based on a diagnostic assessment previously conducted by the team, which involved sending a Google Form to teachers to understand the types of learning media they currently use and how they develop it.

The diagnostic analysis revealed that most teachers predominantly use digital and technology-based learning media. Based on these findings, the team aimed to provide an alternative by offering training on learning media that uses simple tools to hone students' motor and kinesthetic skills through Ecomedia.

The activity began with an exploration of media use in learning using the Mentimeter application, led by Dr. Nur Endah Januarti, to gauge the extent to which teachers already use learning media. Next, Dr. Grendi Hendrastomo presented on "The Benefits of Using Learning Media to Increase Student Participation." Following this, the teachers were divided into small groups to practice creating learning media using simple materials, facilitated by Indra Rahayu Ningsih, M.Pd. and Sasiana Gilar Apriantika, M.A.

Each group then presented the learning media they created. The training was engaging and active, with the teachers showing great enthusiasm and spirit. The hope is that this training will lead to future collaborations between teachers in Indonesia and Malaysia to improve the quality of education by enhancing the capacity of educators. Additionally, this training serves as an implementation of international-level collaboration between Yogyakarta State University and SMK Tunku Syed Idrus Malaysia, contributing to two key performance indicators: Faculty Activity Outside Campus and Study Program Collaboration with Partners.
